Album Review: Fade by Paris Angels (1991) If you're into moody, synth-heavy vibes with a dash of indie charm, Fade by Paris Angels is one of those albums that sneaks up on you. Released in 1991 under Virgin Records, this UK gem blends pop sensibilities with electronic experimentation—think indie pop meets acid-tinged synth wizardry. It's not perfect, but it’s got soul, and sometimes that’s all you need. Let’s talk tracks for a sec. The titular "Fade" hits hard—it’s the kind of song that feels like walking through fog at dawn. You can almost picture yourself standing there, unsure if you’re lost or exactly where you’re supposed to be. There’s something haunting yet comforting about how the synths swell and retreat, leaving space for the vocals to float in like whispers from another dimension. I remember listening to it late one night when my brain was too wired to sleep, and honestly? It just clicked. Like, yeah, life feels messy right now, but maybe that’s okay. Then there’s “Fence,” which slaps harder than you’d expect. This one leans more into an acid house vibe, with these glitchy beats that feel like they’re trying to break free from the track itself. It’s chaotic in the best way possible, the sort of tune that makes you want to move even if no one’s watching. Every time I hear it, I’m reminded of being young and reckless, dancing around my room like nobody could judge me. That raw energy sticks with you. The production team—Michael Johnson, Simon Crompton, and engineer Chris Bebandy—did their thing here. They let the music breathe without over-polishing it, keeping its rough edges intact. And shoutout to Peter Ashworth for the cover art; it matches the album’s vibe perfectly—ethereal, slightly off-kilter, and totally unforgettable. Looking back, Fade feels like a snapshot of its time but also timeless in its own weird way. Listening to it today, it’s wild to think it came out over 30 years ago. Indie pop and synth-pop have evolved so much since then, but this record still holds up. Or maybe I’m just nostalgic. Either way, it’s proof that good music doesn’t always scream for attention—it lingers quietly until you realize it’s been living rent-free in your head forever. Oh, and fun fact: Apparently Craig Johnson handled the layout. Who knew typography could feel so... atmospheric? Anyway, give Fade a spin if you haven’t already. Just don’t blame me if you end up zoning out halfway through because trust me, it happens.

About Paris Angels

Paris Angels, from Guide Bridge, Ashton-under-Lyne, England, are a seven-member indie rock and dance group associated with the Madchester scene of the late 1980s and early 1990s. The members were regulars of The Hacienda danceclub, and soaked in the sounds of acid house and the influential ecstasy-fueled and Balearic grooves predominant at the time. Their sound encompasses danceable beats, mostly positive vibes, funky guitars, and a heavy dose of synth-pop à la (their sound wasn't dissimilar to the Bernard Sumner and Johnny Marr side project .) Paris Angels were active from 1990-'92, and reformed in 2013 to release a new album, "Eclipse," with all original members except for original drummer , who died tragically in 2011. Members: Rikki Turner, Jayne Gill, Steven Tajti, Scott Carey, Mark Adj, Simon Worrall (R.I.P.), Paul Wagstaff (who later joined and .)
