Album Review: Psychomancer’s Sikomansur – A Brutal Blast from 2001 If you’re the kind of person who likes their coffee black, their mornings chaotic, and their music heavy enough to make your neighbors file noise complaints, then Psychomancer’s Sikomansur might just be your jam. Released in 2001 under Cursed Productions, this Death Metal beast roars out of the US with all the subtlety of a freight train crashing into a fireworks factory. And honestly? It’s glorious. Let’s get one thing straight: this isn’t background music for sipping chamomile tea or journaling about your feelings. Nope. This is headbanging-until-your-neck-hurts territory. With tracks like “Darkness Guides My Way” and “Inferno,” Psychomancer delivers riffs so sharp they could slice through steel and vocals raw enough to sound like Shawn McCormick gargled gravel before stepping up to the mic. Oh, and let’s not forget the drumming by Rob Lawrence—man, that guy knows how to turn a snare hit into pure aggression. Now, onto the standouts. First up, “Darkness Guides My Way.” If I had to pick one track that stuck with me (and gave me mild PTSD during quiet moments), it’d be this one. The opening riff grabs you by the throat and doesn’t let go until you’re gasping for air—or maybe just reaching for another beer. Dave Hillegonds’ solo on this track? Absolute fire. It’s the kind of shredding that makes you wanna throw down your air guitar and scream, “Take my money!” Not that there’s any money left after buying beer, but you catch my drift. Then there’s “Inferno,” which feels like being trapped inside a furnace while someone yells at you about impending doom. In the best way possible, obviously. Brad Calkin’s guitar work here is relentless, weaving between blast beats and guttural growls like some sort of metal wizard. By the time John Seyring chimes in with his solo, you’ll either be fist-pumping wildly or questioning every life choice that led you to listen to this album. Either reaction is valid. Props also go to Kathy Shippen for handling the artwork, layout, AND design—you know, in case she ever needs a side hustle as a one-woman creative powerhouse. Meanwhile, Josh Bartunek earns double points as both engineer AND producer. Dude clearly didn’t sleep during the making of this record. Duston Bullard deserves a shoutout too—not only did he lay down basslines thick enough to choke a troll, but he also added backing vocals that somehow made the chaos even more chaotic. So yeah, Sikomansur isn’t perfect. Some transitions feel a bit rough around the edges, and if you’re not already a fan of Death Metal, this probably won’t convert you. But perfection isn’t really the point here, is it? This album is an unapologetic middle finger to mainstream sensibilities, and frankly, we need more of that in our playlists. Final thoughts? Listening to Sikomansur feels like getting punched in the face—but in a good way. Like, a “wow-I-needed-that-catharsis” kind of punch. Or maybe it’s just because I haven’t eaten lunch yet. Who knows? Anyway, crank this sucker up loud, grab a drink, and thank me later. Or don’t. Your ears, your funeral.

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s a cool tidbit: The album *sikomansur* by Psychomancer is a death metal gem that came out in 2001, and it’s got some serious creative muscle behind it. What’s wild is how much Kathy Shippen shaped its look—she handled the artwork, layout, and design all by herself. On the music side, Shawn McCormick brought the vocals to life, while Dave Hillegonds not only sang solos but also wrote one of the tracks. It’s like this whole project was stitched together by a tight-knit crew of talented folks. Oh, and fun fact—the band even roped in two guitar soloists for different tracks, adding extra layers of shredding madness. Dark, heavy, and full of grit, *sikomansur* feels like a true labor of love from start to finish.
