Symphony No. 5 in B-flat Major by Anton Bruckner: A Neo-Romantic Rollercoaster You Didn’t Know You Needed Let’s cut to the chase—this album is a beast. Not the kind of beast that hides under your bed, but the majestic, awe-inspiring sort that makes you want to stare at the stars and question your life choices. Released in 2010 by PentaTone Classics (out of the Netherlands, no less), Symphony No. 5 in B-flat Major brings together Anton Bruckner’s genius, Marek Janowski’s baton-waving wizardry, and the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande’s ability to sound like they’re summoning angels. If classical music had a superhero team, this would be it. Now, let’s talk tracks. I’m not gonna bore you with every single movement because, honestly, who’s got time for that? Instead, I’ll zoom in on two standouts that stuck with me long after my headphones came off. First up: “Scherzo, Molto Vivace (Schnell) – Trio.” This track feels like when you’ve had too much coffee but in a good way. The opening is all jittery strings and brass fanfares, like Bruckner decided to throw a party for his instruments and forgot to tell them how to behave. Then BAM—the trio section hits, and suddenly it’s smooth sailing. It’s as if someone whispered, “Hey, maybe chill for a sec,” and the whole orchestra collectively took a deep breath. The back-and-forth between chaos and calm is so satisfying it almost feels unfair. Like eating chocolate cake while floating on a cloud. Yeah, it’s that good. Next, we’ve got “Adagio, Sehr Langsam.” Slow? Sure. Boring? Absolutely not. This piece drags you into its world like an emotional black hole, but instead of crushing you, it just kinda… holds you there. The strings sob softly, the brass adds gravitas, and before you know it, you’re lying on your couch wondering why you’re crying over a bunch of violins. It’s hauntingly beautiful, like watching a sunset through rain-streaked windows. By the end, you’ll feel like you’ve aged ten years—but in a good way, like fine wine or wisdom earned from bad decisions. What really sets this recording apart is the production quality. PentaTone nailed it with their surround-sound SACD magic. Every note feels alive, like Bruckner himself is sitting right next to you, humming along approvingly. And kudos to Marek Janowski—he doesn’t just conduct; he channels Bruckner’s spirit like some sort of musical medium. Meanwhile, the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande plays like their lives depend on it, which frankly might be true given how intense this symphony gets. Here’s the thing about Symphony No. 5: it’s not background music. This isn’t something you throw on while folding laundry unless you want to accidentally iron your hand because you’re too busy staring into space. No, this album demands attention, respect, and maybe even a glass of red wine. Listen to it once, and you’ll think, “Wow, that was cool.” Listen to it twice, and you’ll start noticing details you missed the first time. Listen to it three times, and you’ll probably start referring to Bruckner as “Tony” like he’s your best friend. Final thought: If aliens ever invade Earth and ask us to prove our species’ worth, I’d hand them this album. Either they’d leave impressed, or they’d abduct me for having terrible taste. Either way, job done.

Austrian organist and composer, born September 4, 1824, in Ansfelden, died October 11, 1896, in Vienna. In 1855 he began to seriously study music in Vienna and graduated in 1861 at the age of 37. It was only at 40 that he began to devote himself seriously to composition. since 1868 he has taught organ and counterpoint at the conservatory of Wien, meanwhile, he makes himself known as an organ concert player. His work was initially appreciated only by a small circle of admirers, only after his death, his great symphonic-choral compositions began to find acclaim and enthusiastic admirers in Europe and around the world. Josef Anton Bruckner best known for his symphonies, masses, Te Deum and motets. His symphonies are considered emblematic of the final stage of Austro-German Romanticism because of their rich harmonic language, strongly polyphonic character, and considerable length. Bruckner's compositions helped to define contemporary musical radicalism, owing to their dissonances, unprepared modulations, and roving harmonies. Please, add composer revision year for Symphonies 1, 2, 3, 4 and 8. Please, add score revision credit with tag "Score Editor" on all symphonies. If it is uncredited you can check your recording at https://www.abruckner.com/discography/. More common score editors are by and (here, please, also add score year).
