The Bread And Beer Band by Bread And Beer Band – A Retro Gem You Didn’t Know You Needed Alright, let’s talk about The Bread And Beer Band. Released way back in ’94 (yeah, that’s nearly 30 years ago—ouch), this UK-born album is one of those quirky little projects you stumble upon and think, “Wait… why haven’t I heard this before?” It’s got a mix of pop, blues, and rock vibes, which sounds like a recipe for chaos but somehow works. The band was on Wig Records, and the lineup? Solid. We’re talking Bernie Calvert on bass, Roger Pope smashing drums, Caleb Quaye shredding guitar, Reg Dwight tickling the ivories (you might know him better as Elton John—that’s right!), and some percussion magic from Rofo & Lennox. Now, onto the tracks. There are ten songs here, but two really stuck with me: Zorba The Greek and Needles And Pins. Let me tell ya why. First up, Zorba The Greek. If you’ve ever been to a dodgy pub where someone starts playing bouzouki air-guitar while everyone clinks glasses, this song will take you straight back there. It’s upbeat, chaotic, and kinda feels like a party you didn’t ask to be invited to—but once you’re in, you don’t wanna leave. The energy is wild, like they just threw everything into it and hoped for the best. Spoiler: It worked. Then there’s Needles And Pins. This one’s a cover, obviously, but man, do they make it their own. It’s got that raw bluesy edge, with the keyboards adding this moody undertone that makes you feel all sorts of nostalgic. You can almost picture some smoky dive bar in London where this track would’ve been blasting late at night. The vocals hit hard too—it’s the kind of tune that gets stuck in your head for days, whether you want it to or not. What’s cool about this album is how unpretentious it feels. It doesn’t try too hard to impress; it just does its thing. Tracks like Mellow Yellow and Wooly Bully keep things fun, while deeper cuts like If I Were A Carpenter show off their softer side. And honestly? That balance keeps you hooked. Reflecting on it now, I guess what stands out most is how timeless it feels. Sure, it came out in the ‘90s, but these songs could easily slot into any playlist today without sounding out of place. Maybe that’s down to the talent involved—or maybe it’s just proof that good music never really goes out of style. Oh, and here’s the kicker: despite having Elton John on keyboards, this album flew under the radar big time. Like, criminally underrated. This is of interest bc of Elton John, but for me it illustrates the mind of the collector perfectly. This music is terrible, and I can see why the band was passed over. Because I don’t have the mind of a collector, I’d pass on it....if I don’t like whatever rarity is on offer, I wouldn’t pay 10 cents for it, which proves my point.
