The Dillinger Esc Plan - Option Paralysis

Option Paralysis by The Dillinger Escape Plan: A Wild Ride Through Chaos and Creativity Alright, let’s get real for a second. Option Paralysis isn’t just an album—it’s like someone took rock, jazz, metalcore, and hardcore, threw it all in a blender, hit puree, then poured the chaos into your ears. Released back in 2010 across Russia, Canada, France, the US, Japan (you name it), this thing feels like no other record out there. It's messy but calculated, wild yet strangely beautiful. And honestly? That’s what makes it unforgettable. Let me tell you about two tracks that stuck with me—“Farewell Mona Lisa” and “Gold Teeth on a Bum.” These songs are polar opposites, but they both slap hard in their own way. First up, “Farewell Mona Lisa.” This track hits you right away with its schizophrenic energy. One moment Greg Puciato is screaming his lungs out, and the next he’s crooning like some kind of twisted lounge singer. The transitions between brutal breakdowns and these almost… cinematic moments? Insane. Like, I remember listening to this late at night, headphones on, thinking, "What did I just sign myself up for?" But here’s the kicker—it doesn’t feel random. Every note, every scream, every weird little piano riff seems intentional, like they’re daring you to keep up. By the end, my brain felt fried—but in the best possible way. Then there’s “Gold Teeth on a Bum,” which is basically a masterclass in how to make noise sound good. Seriously, this song is nuts. You’ve got Billy Rymer smashing the drums like his life depends on it while Benjamin Weinman shreds guitar riffs so sharp they could cut glass. And Liam Wilson’s basslines? Dude sounds like he’s wrestling the instrument instead of playing it. There’s this part where everything drops out except for Greg’s vocals, and it feels like time stops for a second. Then BAM—the whole band crashes back in like a tidal wave. I swear, I played this one on repeat until my neighbors threatened to call the cops. The production deserves a shoutout too. Steve Evetts killed it as the producer—he managed to capture the raw insanity without losing any of the details. Hats off to HL for mastering because this thing punches you in the face sonically. Oh, and can we talk about the artwork from Dimitri Minakakis? Creepy-cool vibes perfectly match the music inside. What really blows my mind though is how many styles The Dillinger Escape Plan crams into this album. Experimental math rock collides head-on with free jazz and noisecore, and somehow it works. Tracks like “Heat Deaf Melted Grill” and “Chinese Whispers” zigzag between genres so fast you barely have time to catch your breath. It’s exhausting—but also exhilarating, like riding a rollercoaster blindfolded. Here’s the thing about Option Paralysis: it’s not for everyone. If you want predictable melodies or easy-to-digest hooks, look elsewhere. But if you’re down for something that challenges you, pushes boundaries, and leaves you questioning reality? This might be your jam. And honestly, after spinning this album, I couldn’t help but laugh a little. Because who else would title a bonus track “Chuck McChip”? Like, come on, guys. That’s peak absurdity right there. So yeah, Option Paralysis is equal parts headache and heart-stopping brilliance. It’s the kind of album that reminds you why music matters—not to soothe, but to stir things up. Just maybe warn your eardrums before diving in.

About The Dillinger Esc Plan

American mathcore band formed in 1997 and based in Morris Plains, New Jersey. The Dillinger Escape Plan merged new-school hardcore, progressive metal and free-jazz. The band was formed in March 1997 in North New Jersey (USA) by guitarist Benjamin Weinman, bassist Adam Doll, vocalist Dimitri Minakakis and drummer Chris Pennie. The band has gone through multiple lineup changes, with Weinman being the only constant member of the band. In August 2016, they announced that they would be breaking up following the tour cycle of their 6th full-length album "Dissociation". Their final show took place at Terminal 5 in New York City on December 29, 2017. Final Line-up: Greg Puciato vocals (2001 2017) Benjamin Weinman guitars (1997 2017) Kevin Antreassian - rhythm guitar (2015 2017) Liam Wilson bass (1999 2017) Billy Rymer - drums, percussion (2008 - 2017) Former Members: Derek Brantley guitars (1997) John Fulton guitars (1997 1999) Adam Doll bass (1997 - 1999), electronics (1999 2002) Jeff Wood bass (live, 1999) Dimitri Minakakis vocals (1997 2001) Brian Benoit guitars (1999 2005) James Love guitars (live, 2005 2006, 2013 2015) Chris Pennie drums, percussion (1997 2007) Gil Sharone drums, percussion (2007 2008) Jeff Tuttle guitars (live, 2006 2012)

Interesting fact about Album

Did you know that *Option Paralysis* by The Dillinger Escape Plan is like a musical rollercoaster blending genres from math rock to free jazz? It’s wild. The album, released in 2010, was produced by Steve Evetts, who also mixed it. Fun detail: guitarist Ben Weinman didn’t just stick to guitar—he played piano, designed sounds, and even contributed backing vocals. And get this, the artwork was handled by Dimitri Minakakis and Pronto Workshop, giving the chaotic music a visual edge. With tracks like "Farewell Mona Lisa" and "Gold Teeth on a Bum," the album feels like a genre-hopping journey. Plus, it dropped in five countries—Russia, Canada, France, the US, and Japan—showing how far their experimental sound reached. Not your typical metalcore band, right?

I always hated how Greg called it "his band" when we all know it was Bens. He makes a good argument for it here though.
