Album Review: "Home Demos Volume 1 There Was A Time" by Marc Bolan Marc Bolan’s Home Demos Volume 1 There Was A Time is a treasure chest of raw creativity, offering fans an intimate glimpse into the mind of one of rock's most enigmatic figures. Released in 2018 via Easy Action, this collection dives deep into Bolan’s archives, pulling out demo versions, alternate takes, and unreleased gems that span his iconic career. With genres ranging from Pop to Funk/Soul, and styles like Glam, Acoustic, and Blues Rock, it’s a sprawling sonic journey that feels both nostalgic and refreshingly unpolished. The album kicks off with some legendary tracks, but two stood out for me personally—“Get It On (Unedited Direct Transfer From Marc’s Own Reels)” and “Lay On Me Lena.” Listening to these feels like sneaking backstage at a secret gig where only you and Bolan are hanging out. First up, “Get It On.” If you’ve ever heard the polished studio version, this take will slap you sideways. Stripped down and brimming with energy, it’s got that rough-around-the-edges vibe that makes demos so special. You can almost picture Bolan hunched over his guitar, lost in the moment, letting the groove flow naturally. The percussion here is looser, less polished than the hit single we all know, giving it a funky, almost jam-session feel. It reminds you how much magic happens when things aren’t perfect—when they’re just real. Then there’s “Lay On Me Lena,” which hits differently in this stripped-back format. Those little rhythmic bursts add texture without overshadowing Bolan’s genius. This isn’t just another posthumous cash grab—it’s a love letter to Bolan’s legacy. Andrew J. Gardner’s liner notes give context, while the sheer volume of material shows how prolific Bolan truly was. Sure, not every track lands perfectly, but that’s kinda the point. These weren’t meant to be finished products; they were sketches, ideas, moments captured in time. Reflecting on this album, I’m struck by how human it feels. Bolan wasn’t just a glam icon or a rock star—he was a dude messing around with chords and lyrics, chasing inspiration wherever it led him. One random thought keeps popping into my head: What would Bolin think about TikTok? Would he be vibing with influencers covering “Telegram Sam” or laughing at memes about his feathered hats? Probably both. If you’re a diehard fan or even just someone curious about the roots of glam rock, Home Demos Volume 1 There Was A Time is worth your time. Just don’t expect perfection—expect something far better: authenticity. Final Verdict: 8/10 It’s messy, beautiful, and utterly Bolan. "The material represented on this unique series of CDs comes in the main from four reels of home demo tapes recorded by Marc at his London homes between the spring of 1971 and the autumn of 1973.
What has been uncovered within these reels are the genuine embryonic beginnings of many Bolan classics, along with well over a dozen songs discarded as the recording process moved from Marc's four track TEAC A3340/Revox A77 home tape machines all the way to finished studio masters."
"Most of these recordings were stolen from Marc & Gloria’s home literally the day after Marc died. It is with great pride that we are returning these recordings to the family and the royalties from sales of this set, now audio restored and mastered by Anders Peterson at Ghost Sound in Sweden, will help fund The Marc Bolan School of Music through Gloria’s charity The Light of Love Foundation."

A pal of mine at the time had the album (he was a Hawkwind fan ?) . . . he was the only one who could afford it - it being a triple album of all things. Had it on extended loan . . . the only way to hear the song back then ??? I did give it back - eventually ?

This wasn’t really a ‘demo’. Marc recorded this as an actual acoustic track for the charity album. I prefer it to the later electric version.

tbh this is not how I remember it from the Glastonbury Fayre album (though it may be 30 years since I heard it). The playing was lighter, and it was a bit more "worked". The album notes mentioned it was a 2 track, and may have been overdubbed by Marc from the demo played here. I always thought that the acoustic version superior to the studio track, even though I think that is great also.
