Album Review: 4 Ouvertüren Orchestral Suites BWV 1066-1069 by Johann Sebastian Bach If you’re even remotely into classical music, chances are you’ve stumbled across Johann Sebastian Bach’s name more times than you can count. The dude was basically a musical wizard, and this album is yet another proof of that. Released in 2016 under Archiv Produktion (Deutsche Grammophon), 4 Ouvertüren Orchestral Suites BWV 1066-1069 brings together some of his most iconic orchestral suites performed by the Münchener Bach-Orchester, led by conductor Karl Richter. And let me tell ya—this one’s a gem. First off, let’s talk about the vibe here. It’s Baroque all the way, which means intricate melodies, lush instrumentation, and just enough drama to keep things interesting without going overboard. If you're looking for something chill but still sophisticated enough to impress your artsy friends at dinner parties, this is it. Now, onto my favorite tracks. I gotta shout out Suite No. 3 D-dur, BWV 1068, especially the "Air" movement. You might know it as “Air on the G String,” though technically that title came later—it’s become kinda legendary for good reason. This piece feels like floating on clouds while sipping tea… or maybe whiskey, depending on how your day went. The strings are so smooth they almost feel tangible, like silk brushing against your skin. Every note hangs perfectly in balance, making it impossible not to hit repeat. Honestly, if there were an award for Most Serene Track Ever Written, this would win hands down. Another standout? Suite No. 2 H-moll, BWV 1067, particularly the "Badinerie." Oh man, this one flips the script entirely. Where the "Air" is calm and reflective, the "Badinerie" bursts with energy—it’s playful, cheeky, and insanely catchy. The flute takes center stage here, zipping around like a caffeinated hummingbird. It’s impossible not to grin when listening to it because it just feels alive. Plus, it’s short enough that you’ll probably end up looping it five times before realizing what happened. Fair warning: once this tune gets stuck in your head, it doesn’t leave easily. What really makes this album shine is the teamwork behind it. Karl Richter’s direction gives these centuries-old pieces a fresh coat of paint, while the Münchener Bach-Orchester plays with precision and heart. Hats off to the engineers and producers too—they’ve captured every detail beautifully, from the rich resonance of the strings to the crisp articulation of the woodwinds. So yeah, this record isn’t groundbreaking in terms of innovation (it is Bach after all), but it doesn’t need to be. Instead, it reminds us why his work has lasted through generations. Listening to these suites feels like stepping into a time machine, except instead of seeing dinosaurs or robots, you’re transported to 18th-century Europe where powdered wigs were cool and people wrote absolute bangers without electricity. Wild, right? Final thought? Here’s the unexpected part: despite being nearly 300 years old, this music still slaps. Like, genuinely. Whether you’re studying, cleaning your apartment, or just zoning out, these tracks have got your back. Who knew Baroque could be such a vibe?

About Johann Sebastian Bach, Münchener BachOrchester, Karl Richter

Johann Sebastian Bach was born on March 21, 1685 in Eisenach, Thuringia, Germany. A prolific German composer and organist, his sacred and secular works for choir, orchestra and solo instruments drew together the strands of the baroque genre and brought it to its ultimate maturity. Although he introduced no new forms, he enriched the prevailing German style with a robust contrapuntal technique, a control of harmonic and motivic organisation from the smallest to the largest scales, and the adaptation of rhythms and textures from abroad, particularly Italy and France. Many people consider him to be the greatest Baroque composer, and one of the greatest composers of all time. Revered for their intellectual depth, technical command and artistic beauty, J.S. Bach's works include the Brandenburg concertos, the keyboard suites and partitas, the Mass in B Minor, the St. Matthew Passion, The Musical Offering, The Art of Fugue and a large number of cantatas, of which about 220 survive. He died on July 28, 1750. Some of his sons also became composers - , , and .
