Take The A Train by Michel Petrucciani: A Jazz Ride Worth Taking Alright, let’s talk about Take The A Train by Michel Petrucciani, Steve Gadd, and Anthony Jackson. Released in 1999 under Dreyfus Jazz (yep, outta Spain), this album is one of those jazz gems that sneaks up on you when you least expect it. It’s not trying too hard to impress—it just does. And honestly? That’s what makes it so good. First off, the title track, “Take The A Train,” is a classic for a reason. You’ve probably heard it before, but this version? Oh man, it’s got swagger. Michel’s piano work here feels like he’s having a casual chat with you, but then BAM—he throws in these little flourishes that make your ears perk up. Steve Gadd on drums keeps things tight without being overbearing, while Anthony Jackson lays down basslines so smooth they could sell silk sheets. This isn’t just a cover; it’s a conversation between three masters who clearly vibe together. Every time I listen to it, I find myself nodding along like, “Yeah, okay, fair point, Michel.” Another standout is “Blues For MG.” Now, this one hits different. It starts off slow, almost lazy, but don’t let that fool you—it builds into something kinda magical. There’s this moment where Petrucciani seems to lose himself in the keys, and suddenly you’re right there with him. Like, whoa, wait, how did we end up here? It’s raw, emotional, and feels more like eavesdropping on someone’s private jam session than listening to a polished studio track. That’s the beauty of it—it doesn’t feel forced. What really sticks with me about this album is how alive it sounds. These guys weren’t just playing notes; they were telling stories. Even though it came out in ’99, it doesn’t feel dated at all. If anything, it’s timeless. Like, if aliens landed tomorrow and asked, “What’s jazz?” I’d hand them this record. Here’s the kicker though—listening to this album makes me wonder what kind of pizza Michel would order. Deep dish? Thin crust? Something fancy with goat cheese? Because whatever it was, I bet it’d be as unpredictable and delightful as his music. So yeah, if you’re into jazz—or even if you’re not—give Take The A Train a spin. It might just surprise you.
