Album Review: Shostakovich Ives Piano Trios Klaviertrios by Beaux Arts Trio If you’re into classical music with a modern twist, this 1984 gem from the Netherlands is worth your time. The album Shostakovich Ives Piano Trios Klaviertrios brings together two heavyweights of composition—Dmitri Shostakovich and Charles Ives—and gives them the treatment they deserve thanks to the legendary Beaux Arts Trio. Released on Philips Records, it’s got that perfect mix of technical brilliance and emotional depth. Let’s talk about the lineup here because it's kinda mind-blowing. You’ve got Menahem Pressler tickling the ivories like nobody’s business, Isidore Cohen weaving magic on violin, and Bernard Greenhouse holding down the cello duties like a total pro. Together, these guys make some serious musical magic happen. And let’s not forget Max Harrison’s liner notes or those striking Giraudon photos for the cover art—they add just enough flair to tie everything together. Now onto the tracks. There are plenty of moments in this album that stick with you, but if I had to pick one standout, it’d be Shostakovich’s Trio No. 2 For Violin, Cello And Piano, Op. 67. Specifically, the “Largo” movement—it hits different. It starts off all somber and reflective, almost like someone whispering secrets to you late at night. Then BAM! The strings come in, heavy and haunting, and suddenly you’re caught up in this whirlwind of emotion. It feels raw, like Shostakovich poured every ounce of his soul into those notes. Honestly, it’s the kind of piece that makes you wanna sit quietly for a minute after it ends. Like…whoa. Another track that really stands out? Charles Ives’ TSIAJ (Presto) ("This Scherzo Is A Joke"). True to its title, it’s playful and quirky, bouncing around with this mischievous energy that’s impossible not to smile at. It’s such a contrast to the weightier stuff on the album, and I think that’s why it sticks in my head. It’s like a little burst of sunshine breaking through the clouds. Plus, the way the trio nails the timing and dynamics? Chef’s kiss. What strikes me most about this album is how well it balances darkness and light. One moment you’re diving deep into Shostakovich’s brooding world, and the next you’re laughing along with Ives’ cheeky humor. It keeps you on your toes, which isn’t always easy to pull off in classical music. So yeah, listening to this record feels like hanging out with old friends who have incredible stories to tell—but also a few jokes up their sleeves. Funny thing is, even though it came out nearly 40 years ago, it still sounds fresh today. Maybe that’s what happens when genius meets passion. Or maybe it’s just proof that good music doesn’t age. Either way, give it a spin—you won’t regret it. Oh, and random thought: Can we all agree that album covers back then were just cooler? Those Giraudon shots could double as art gallery pieces. Just saying.

Interesting fact about Album

Here’s something cool: The album *Shostakovich Ives Piano Trios Klaviertrios* brings together two wildly different composers—Dmitri Shostakovich and Charles Ives. Shostakovich’s Trio No. 2 is hauntingly emotional, written during World War II, while Ives’ *TSIAJ (This Scherzo Is A Joke)* lives up to its name with quirky, playful energy. It’s like a musical clash of serious depth and lighthearted wit, all performed by the legendary Beaux Arts Trio. The cellist, Bernard Greenhouse, was known for his rich tone, and pianist Menahem Pressler added incredible finesse. Fun detail: the cover art comes from a photo by Giraudon, giving the album a unique visual vibe to match its eclectic sound.
