Two Ton Baker - Im Forever Blowing Bubbles Five Foot Two

Review by Sharon Vander Meer

Alright, let’s dive into this little slice of 1963 goodness. I’m Forever Blowing Bubbles / Five Foot Two by Two Ton Baker isn’t your typical pop album—it’s got that old-school charm you don’t hear much these days. Released on the Heartbeat label in the US, it’s pure vocal magic with a side of nostalgia. And honestly? It feels like stepping back into a time when life was simpler, but emotions ran just as deep. First up, “Five Foot Two.” Man, this track hits different. It’s playful yet kinda heartfelt, like remembering someone who made your day brighter without even trying. You can almost picture Two Ton Baker belting it out, all smooth and soulful, while the band keeps things tight behind him. The melody sticks to you like gum on a hot sidewalk—annoyingly catchy, but in a good way. I mean, seriously, how does he make those lyrics sound so effortless? It’s not flashy or overproduced; it’s just… real. Like an old friend stopping by for coffee. Then there’s “I’m Forever Blowing Bubbles,” which is basically the soundtrack to staring out a rainy window and thinking about stuff you probably shouldn’t. There’s something hauntingly beautiful about the way Baker sings it—like he knows heartbreak personally. The song has this bittersweet vibe, where the words are sad, but the delivery makes you feel like maybe sadness ain’t so bad after all. Honestly, every time I hear it, I get lost in my own head for a minute. That’s rare these days, ain’t it? What gets me about this album is how raw it feels. It’s not polished to death or stuffed full of effects. Instead, it lets the songs breathe, letting Baker’s voice do most of the work. Sure, some folks might say it’s dated—and yeah, it definitely has that mid-century thing going on—but that’s part of its charm. Listening to it feels like finding an old photograph tucked inside a book—you didn’t expect it, but now you’re hooked. Here’s the kicker though: albums like this remind us why music matters. They weren’t chasing trends or likes—they were just telling stories. So if you stumble across I’m Forever Blowing Bubbles / Five Foot Two, give it a spin. Who knows? Maybe you’ll find yourself humming along—or wondering why modern music doesn’t hit quite the same way anymore. Oh, and hey—if anyone asks, tell ‘em Two Ton Baker sent you.

About Two Ton Baker

Pianist / singer / television personality Dick "Two Ton" Baker (born in Chicago on May 2, 1916,) was a giant -- literally (he was 6'2" and 350 pounds). and figuratively -- on the Chicago entertainment scene for nearly four decades, from the late 1930s until his death in 1975. He played piano quite well and sang in a pleasing, infectious baritone voice, but mainly, he entertained, in whatever medium. He had several popular radio shows on on the Chicago Tribune's flagship station, WGN, one of which went out nationwide over the Mutual network. He was on the first television broadcast on WGN-TV (April 5, 1948), and later had very popular children's programs on that and other Chicago TV stations. His best known show was "Happy Pirates" which began in 1952. "Two Ton Baker, The Music Maker" died at his home in Hazel Crest, Illinois on May 4, 1975, just two days after his 59th birthday.
