Bobby Cole Jazz Hip Trio - A Perfect Day Bat Rock

Review by Sudhanthiran Ganesan

Alright, let’s dive into A Perfect Day Bat Rock by Bobby Cole Jazz Hip Trio. This funky little gem from 2006 is one of those albums that kinda sneaks up on you. It’s got that raw, unpolished vibe that makes it feel like you’re hanging out in some smoky Barcelona club late at night. The genre? Funk and soul, but really, it leans heavy on the funk side. Released under the label 2 Siders, this Spanish trio brings some serious groove to the table. Now, let me break it down for ya. There are two tracks I keep coming back to: “Bat Rock” and “A Perfect Day.” “Bat Rock” is wild—it’s like they took all the best parts of a Saturday night party and crammed ‘em into four minutes. The bassline? Insanely groovy. Like, you can’t help but nod your head even if you're just doing dishes. And the horns? They hit hard without being over-the-top. It’s not trying too hard to impress anyone, which ironically makes it super impressive. Honestly, I’ve caught myself humming this track days later without even realizing it. Then there’s “A Perfect Day,” which feels like its chill cousin. Where “Bat Rock” gets you moving, this one slows things down just enough to let you breathe. The guitar work here is smooth as butter—like someone poured warm honey straight into your ears (gross image, but you get what I mean). It’s laid-back but still packs a punch with its rhythm section. It’s one of those songs where you think, "Yeah, today’s gonna be alright," even when life's throwing curveballs at ya. What’s cool about this album is how it doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel. Instead, it takes the wheel, gives it a fresh coat of paint, and lets it roll. You can tell these guys weren’t sweating perfection—they were having fun making music, and that energy shines through. Here’s the thing though: listening to A Perfect Day Bat Rock feels like finding an old vinyl record in a dusty corner of a thrift shop. At first glance, it might not look like much, but once you give it a spin, you realize it’s gold. Weirdly enough, it reminds me of those random people you meet at parties who seem quiet at first but end up being the most interesting person in the room. Yeah, that’s this album in a nutshell. Oh, and here’s a random thought: If Batman ever decided to throw a low-key BBQ instead of fighting crime, this would 100% be his playlist. Just saying.

that's me playing drums on this album I worked with bob for many years and it was quite a ride i'm also playing on Mr.Bojangles. He was such a talent and had a great sense of humor I really loved the guy and miss him. Unfortunately he drank himself to death.

Bobby Cole tour-de-force incredible vocal and killer driving piano create a masterful performance making one wonder why this legend whose extraordinary talent was celebrated yet sadly didn't receive widespread deserved acclaim, loving "Perfect Day" from "A Point Of View" a timeless classic filled with memorable performances.

this song sounds so upbeat, but the lyrics are so melancholy. It makes me think of dark days and past loves with a smile on my face because i made it through. It really has the same irony as Lou Reed's Perfect day.  R.I.P Mr.Cole

I first heard Bobby Cole's music, when as an undergrad at Pitt, I regularly tuned into Tony Mowad's broadcasts on WYDD. He regularly featured songs from the Point of View album, which I immediately purchased and have enjoyed listen to it for the last 45 years. Thanks to those who have posted personal rememberances of this truly gifted singer and composer.
