Review by Chris Farley

If you’re into classical music—or even if you’re just dipping your toes into the genre—Handel’s Water Music (Wassermusik) is one of those albums that feels like a warm hug for your ears. Released in 1989 by EMI Digital, this recording features Sir Neville Marriner conducting the Academy of St Martin-in-the-Fields. It’s got all the hallmarks of Baroque brilliance: intricate compositions, rich orchestration, and that timeless vibe only Handel could pull off. Now, I’m not gonna lie—there are a ton of tracks on this album (seriously, it’s packed), but two stood out to me while I was listening: “IX: Hornpipe” and “XIV: Lentement.” Let me tell ya why these stuck in my head. First up, “IX: Hornpipe.” Man, this track just moves. It’s upbeat, playful, and kinda makes you wanna grab someone and waltz around the room—even if you don’t know how to waltz. The horns here really shine; they’ve got this bold, brassy energy that feels celebratory without being over-the-top. Like, imagine yourself at some fancy royal party back in the day, except instead of awkward small talk, everyone’s vibing to this infectious groove. That’s what “Hornpipe” does—it transports you. Then there’s “XIV: Lentement,” which is basically the opposite vibe. This one slows things way down and hits you with all the feels. The strings are so smooth they almost feel like velvet, and the pacing gives you time to breathe. Listening to it felt like sitting by a quiet river at sunset, watching the water ripple. You can hear why Handel was such a genius—he knew exactly how to balance liveliness with moments of calm reflection. And honestly? That contrast between tracks like “Hornpipe” and “Lentement” is what makes this album so special. One thing I gotta mention about this version is how tight the orchestra sounds under Marriner’s direction. Everything flows together seamlessly, like they weren’t just playing notes but telling a story. You can tell these musicians have been doing their thing for years—they bring an effortless elegance to every piece. So yeah, Water Music might be old-school, but it’s still got plenty of charm. Listening to it made me realize something kinda funny: no matter how much music changes, some stuff never gets old. Like, we’ve got Spotify playlists full of bangers today, but none of them will ever give you the same chill as hearing Handel’s melodies float through the air. Weird, right? Anyway, whether you’re studying, relaxing, or pretending to be royalty for a day, this album’s worth a listen. Just don’t blame me if you end up humming minuets during your next Zoom meeting.

Interesting fact about Album

Did you know that Handel’s *Water Music* was originally performed on a barge floating down the River Thames in 1717? It was written to impress King George I, who loved it so much that the musicians played it three times that night. Fast forward to 1989, and Sir Neville Marriner brought this Baroque masterpiece back to life with the Academy of St Martin-in-the-Fields. Their recording includes all the iconic movements, like the lively "Hornpipe" and the elegant "Minuet." It’s wild to think music this old still feels so fresh today.
