Album Review: "E Lucevan Le Stelle / La Donna E Mobile" by Michele Fleta Michele Fleta’s rendition of E Lucevan Le Stelle and La Donna E Mobile is a masterclass in operatic expression. Released under the His Master’s Voice label, this UK-produced album dives deep into two iconic arias from Puccini's Tosca and Verdi's Rigoletto. If you’re into classical music or just dipping your toes into opera, this recording offers something undeniably special. Let’s start with E Lucevan Le Stelle. This track has stuck with me for its raw emotional depth. Fleta’s tenor vocals are both haunting and tender, capturing the introspective despair of Cavaradossi as he faces his final moments. The aria builds slowly but deliberately, like twilight settling over Rome. What stands out most isn’t just Fleta’s technical precision—it’s how he makes every note feel personal, almost confessional. You don’t need to understand Italian to feel the weight of his longing. It’s one of those performances that grabs hold of you and doesn’t let go. Then there’s La Donna E Mobile, a complete contrast in tone but equally memorable. If E Lucevan Le Stelle feels like a quiet storm, this piece bursts onto the scene with swagger and charm. Fleta brings an infectious energy here, embodying the Duke of Mantua’s roguish confidence without ever slipping into caricature. The phrasing is crisp, the delivery smooth yet playful—like he’s winking at the audience through the music. For all its lightheartedness, though, there’s still a sense of gravity in Fleta’s interpretation, reminding us why this aria remains such a crowd-pleaser. What strikes me about these tracks is how they showcase Fleta’s versatility. He can shift gears effortlessly between heart-wrenching vulnerability and bold charisma. While some might argue that his voice lacks the larger-than-life power of other tenors, I’d counter that his subtlety is what sets him apart. There’s no unnecessary showboating; instead, we get pure storytelling through song. It’s funny—listening to this album feels like being invited backstage after a grand performance. You see the cracks beneath the polish, the humanity behind the heroics. And honestly? That’s kinda refreshing. In a world obsessed with perfection, Fleta reminds us that even the stars flicker before they shine. So if you’re hunting for a record that combines timeless classics with heartfelt artistry, give this one a spin. Just don’t blame me if you find yourself humming “La Donna E Mobile” while brushing your teeth.

Der sing immer als hätte er eine Socke im Mund. Ich versteh nicht was haben all die abgedunkelten, grunzigen Stimmen in romantischen Rollen verloren. Die klingen alle mindestens zwanzig Jahren älter als sie sein sollen.

I didn't know what was wrong with his phrasing until I saw a comment by an user who was saying everything he sings sounds like a zarzuela or a gypsy song. That's it, and it's very unnerving in bel canto and Verdi, a little less unnerving in verismo.

Llevo 13 años esperando más maravillas de Fleta. Hace poco se cumplieron cien años de su debut y habría que celebrarlo.

I doubt he sang a total of 260 Tosca performances ,his operatic career was basically over in a decade though he continued to sing zarzuelas for a few more years. Unlikely he sang 25-26 Tosca performances per year ,I would be sorry to think him so unversatile as to have to sing half of his performances in Tosca because opera house managers were unwilling to hire him in anything else. A total of 50-80 Tosca performances is more likely.
