Album Review: Aller au delà des Mots by Patrice Saunier, André Frier, Pierrot Gadiolet Alright, let’s talk about this hidden gem from 1977—Aller au delà des Mots. If you’re into French folk with a dash of world and pop vibes, this one’s worth your time. It’s got that warm, nostalgic feel of the ‘70s but still feels kinda timeless, like an old sweater you don’t wanna throw out. The album comes from France, released under Le Kiosque d’Orphée, and it’s packed with talent. You’ve got Yamina M’Henni belting out soulful vocals, André Frier strumming his guitar like he’s telling stories through strings, and even some flute magic courtesy of Franck Lewenberg. Oh, and shoutout to Jean Chazy and Maurizia Breviglieri for the artwork—it’s simple but fits the vibe perfectly. Now, onto the tracks. I’ll pick two that stuck with me because, honestly, there’s too much good stuff here to cover all at once. First up is “Rien n’apprivoise le Temps” (which roughly translates to “Nothing Tames Time”). This song just hits different. The harmonies are hauntingly beautiful, almost like they’re whispering secrets straight into your soul. There’s something raw and unpolished about the way Yamina sings—it’s not perfect, but that’s what makes it so real. Plus, the acoustic guitar riff? Pure magic. It’s one of those songs where you find yourself zoning out and thinking about life, y’know? Then there’s “Moi j’aime voir les gens heureux” (“I Love Seeing People Happy”). Man, this track is sunshine in audio form. It starts off mellow, then builds into this uplifting groove that makes you wanna grin and dance around your living room. André Frier’s vocals here are smooth as butter, and the percussion by Jean Marc Coron gives it this playful kick. It’s impossible not to feel lighter after listening to it. Like, seriously, try being grumpy while this plays—I dare ya. One thing I love about this album is how organic everything feels. No overproduced nonsense or flashy tricks—just honest music made by people who clearly adore what they do. And can we take a moment to appreciate the variety? From poetic ballads to toe-tapping tunes, Aller au delà des Mots covers a lot of ground without ever losing its charm. Reflecting on this record, I can’t help but think about how music connects us across decades. Here we are in 2023, talking about an album made in 1977, and it still resonates. Weird, right? But also kinda comforting. Maybe that’s why albums like this stick around—they remind us that human emotions haven’t changed much, no matter the era. Oh, and random thought: If someone remade this album today, I bet they’d add way too many electronic beats. Let’s hope nobody tries, though. Some things are better left untouched. So yeah, give Aller au delà des Mots a spin if you’re feeling adventurous. Just don’t blame me if you end up daydreaming about French countryside roads while humming along.
